When you hear the term “golden girls” you may think of Blanche, Dorothy and Rose from the hit TV series, but mention the “golden girls” in Key West and it has a whole different meaning. Back on July 8, 1996 two lovely ladies from Alabama,
newly certified in diving, tried their hand at treasure hunting off Mel Fisher’s salvage boat the Dauntless.
From the depths of the ocean that day these ladies, Jean Thornton and Debbie Sexton, pulled up a beautiful gold chain. Their success in finding treasure continued and Mel dubbed them the “Golden Girls.”
Since that day their love for treasure “finding” and Key West has grown exponentially.
To say that Jean Thornton loves Key West would be an understatement. Jean embraces fully what Key West is all about; live life fully, love unconditionally and always be there when someone needs a hand. Many have experienced Jean’s compassion and love when they needed a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on or simply someone to listen. Jean is now the one who needs our compassion, prayers and anything else we can do.
Jean’s son Andy has been going through some very difficult back and spine problems over the last year and has just recently been involved in a serious car accident and is facing several costly surgeries and a very long recovery period (Read Andy's Story). This will require Jean and her husband Joe to outfit the first floor of their home to accommodate his needs as he will be wheelchair bound for quite some time.
